Garage door opener not working? One test tells you which repair
Half the “broken opener” calls we take in Kearney are not opener problems. The opener is the part with the buttons and the noise, so it gets the blame, but it’s a middleman: springs do the lifting, the opener steers. Before you price a new unit, do the one test that splits every opener complaint into its two real categories.
The test: door closed, opener unplugged if it’s misbehaving badly. Pull the red release cord so the door disconnects from the trolley. Now lift the door by hand to about waist height and let go.
- Lifts with one arm and floats where you left it? The door side is healthy. Your problem is genuinely the opener. Branch one.
- Heavy as furniture, gritty, or rising crooked? The opener was struggling with a door it can’t lift, and replacing it would fix nothing. Branch two.
Branch one: it really is the opener
Openers fail in a few recognizable ways, and the symptom points at the part.
A unit that’s completely dead, no lights, is a power problem before it’s an opener problem. Garages lose outlets to tripped GFCIs constantly. If the outlet is live and the unit is still dark, the logic board or transformer has gone, and on a unit past ten or twelve years that usually tips the repair-or-replace math toward replace.
A unit that hums or clicks but doesn’t move the door has usually stripped its main drive gear. On LiftMaster and Chamberlain chain-drive units this is a known wear part: white plastic gear, and you’ll sometimes find its shavings on top of the motor housing. Rebuildable for a fraction of a new opener if the rest of the unit is worth keeping.
A unit that runs but the door stays put has a broken trolley or a disconnected release - check whether the cord got pulled by a car antenna or a tall load. And remotes that die one at a time while the wall button keeps working are batteries or programming, not machinery.
Openers last roughly 10 to 15 years. Repairs on the far side of that range compete with the cost of a new unit installed, and a new unit brings brighter LED lighting, quieter belt drive, and battery backup, which Nebraska outage weather makes worth having.
Branch two: the door is the patient
If the manual lift was hard, the opener has been forcing a door with a mechanical problem, possibly for months. The usual suspects, roughly in order of how often we find them:
- Spring tension gone or wrong. The big one. A door with a dead or tired torsion spring can weigh 150 pounds at the opener’s trolley. See the spring repair page for the signs.
- Seized or flat-spotted rollers dragging in the track.
- Track knocked out of plumb, often at one spot the door fights every trip.
- A cable off its drum, which also makes the door climb crooked.
The reason this branch matters: an opener forcing a bad door is eating itself. The stripped gear from branch one is very often the result of a branch-two problem nobody caught. Fix the door first, then see if the opener still needs help. A tune-up visit that restores the balance sometimes returns the “broken” opener to another five years of service.
What to say on the phone
Give us the test result and one symptom: “lifts easy by hand, opener hums but nothing moves,” or “manual lift is heavy on the left side.” Either sentence gets you an accurate quote and the right parts on the truck the first trip.
